Islam and human rights

In the west it's the common habit that every good thing attributes to them and they proved as this world is blessed with it due to them. However before the Islam the world was steeped in ignorance and unaware of any such things. This is Islam which explains the way of livings to the world and now the west adopted all the teachings of Islam mentioned in Quran and Hadith before 1400 years.

Islam is to complete religion in which Allah Almighty has given the complete guidance about every aspect of the life in a clear manner. It's the only religion who emphasize on peace. It gives rights to each human being as well as animals. The human rights that Islam protects are the life and property of every citizen is consecrated, whatever his religion is, is either that he is Muslim or not. Human equality is highly focuses majorly and not one is considered superior or favored because of their race, assets or power. The criteria of superiority are only faith and piety. The annual pilgrimage to Makah the Prophet (PBUH) has given the complete charter of human rights. Its each and every word enlightened all the aspects of human life. It clearly mentions the rights of servants and asked them to treat properly.

Racism is a major problem of today's modern world has completely finished in Islam. And its practical example can be seen on the annual pilgrimage at Makah every year. Where Muslims from all over the world come together and perform hajj without any difference. Where slave and king offers the prayer together.

Islam is the religion of complete justice as said in Quran:"" truly God commands you to give back trusts to those to whom they are due, and when you judge between people, to judge with justice... " "(4:58)"

The human killing is totally restricted and the government is responsible for the protection of the all the nations and their assets. Even women have more privileged and special care is associated with her either she is mother, wife, sister or daughter. Hence Islam gives the complete coding of life embedded in its teaching. And the human rights are completely and perfectly mentioned in it.

Come to God through Islam

Islam is God's Final message to humanity that inspired his last Messenger, Muhammad (PBUH). Islam is not a new religion. It is the religion of Abraham, Noah, Joseph, Moses, and Jesus. The only difference is that while each of the mentioned prophets was sent to his nation, Muhammad (PBUH) was sent to all humanity.

The word Islam means present - more correctly means to submit to the will of God. God inspired every one of his messengers with guidelines. The messengers then transmitted the guidelines for his people.

Muhammad (PBUH) was the last Messenger of God. He (PBUH) as the messengers before him (PBUH) was sent with guidelines. The guidelines were a continuation of the guidelines that inspired the previous messengers. Unlike the messengers before him (PBUH), Muhammad (PBUH) was sent to all humanity.

The Qur'an is the name of the revelation contained in the guidelines. God has called those who follow the Koran, Muslims. The word Muslim means "those who are subjected to the will of God".

God has ordered the Muslims to forbid what is wrong and to prohibit it is good. They were ordered to remain chaste. He has ordered five prayers that must be completed in one day at certain times on them. He has ordained them fasting during the month of Ramzan.

He has ordered to be obedient to parents, to be merciful to the orphans, to feed the poor, to help the weak and oppressed, to tell the truth, be grateful to the people, and treat others as one would like to be treated.

In return, God has promised paradise for Muslims. In paradise, the Muslims will enjoy every pleasure can think off. They are reclining on Thrones and beautiful Virgin will be given to the marriage. They drink from rivers of wine, milk and water.

In paradise, no one will be jealous of the other. There will be no hatred among the inhabitants of paradise. They have a great one with the word "Peace".

As for those who reject the Final message which God has revealed, you will go to hell. We will meet there in forever. The doors of which are guarded by stringent angels who won't respond to the cries and the pain of those burning in hell.

However, Islam is the end that God revealed to Muhammad (PBUH) message. Muhammad (PBUH) was the last Messenger of God. Adam, Abraham, Noah, Joseph, Moses, and Jesus were all Muslims - who showed their will to God. They were sent to their Nations with guidelines. Muhammad (PBUH) was sent to all humanity to give good news to Muslims and to warn non-Muslims of an eternal abode in hell.

Take a little eye on religion (ISLAM)

Pillars Of Islam

Islamic society is a society based on the principles of Islam. It has a stamp of teachings of the Quran and Sunnah. The thought and actions as well as beliefs and customs of its individuals are in accordance with Islamic principles. All rules and regulations of this society are framed in the light of the teachings of Islam and its individuals lead their lives in conformity with the Islamic code of conduct. Hazrat Muhammad (P.B.U.H) founded the Islamic society in Madina. This primitive Islamic society set examples of respect for humanity, coexistence, fraternity, equality and tolerance. When Islam spread to other countries the Islamic society was broadened. Wherever Muslims went they displayed social values of a high order and as a result Islamic society was distinguished from other societies. There are the five basic Pillars of Islam.

1 - Kalima

2 - Namaz

3 - Roza

4 - Zakat

5 - Hajj

Kalima

"La ILaha ILAllaho Muhammad Dur Rasool Lul Allah" that is "None has the right to be worshiped but Allah, and Muhammad (P.B.U.H) is the Messenger of Allah". It is called a Kalima of Muslims. No one has the right to be worshiped but Allah means Allah is one. To belief on Oneness of Allah (God) is the first and fundamental principle of Islam. It means that the creator and sovereign of this universe is Allah. He has no rival. He is the creator of all objects and He is not dependent on any one. Every Muslim must acknowledge the Oneness of Allah and His supreme sovereignty and must follow His orders.

When a Muslim accepts the Oneness of Allah (God) and believes Him to be the creator and the Master of universe, he is bound to lead his life within the limits and principles prescribed by Allah and worship Him only. It also means that in the eyes of a Muslim all human beings are equal and there is no distinction based on race or colour. The dictates of Allah have been imposed on all human beings. The richer or the poor, all are equal before law. A virtuous and pious man has precedence over others before Allah.

Oneness of Allah (God) also means that only Allah is fit to be worshipped and all Muslims should observe the prayers and instructions prescribed for them.

Secondly, A Muslim must believe on the teachings of Hazrat Muhammad (P.B.U.H). He is the last prophet of Allah with last religion known as Islam. Every Muslim must follow his teachings called Sunnah.

Seven Important Things

There are the 7 things on which a Muslim must believe.

1 - Believe on Allah

2 - Believe on Messengers and Prophets of Allah.

3 - Believe on Angels of Allah

4 - Believe on books of Allah like Quran.

5 - Believe on day of Qayamat (when everything is destroyed)

6 - Believe on good or bad Taqdeer (Destiny)

7 - Believe on Rising after being dead

Namaz

Namaz is the first and foremost among the prayers of Muslims. Every Muslim man and women is bound to offer Namaz. It is a pillar of Islam and a source if ascension for a true believer. Namaz prevents a Muslim from doing immoral and indecent acts.

Seven Conditions Before Praying Namaz

The body has to be clean.

The clothes has to be clean

The place of praying Namaz has to be clean

Satr-e-awrat (Covering the body)

It should be the time of praying Namaz

To ace the Qibla

To make the niyat (intention) for Namaz

Steps To Make Namaz (Prayer) Better

Requisites of good Namaz suggested by Sufis are Twelve. The Sufis Islamic Scholars) write " There are twelve thousand blessings in Namaz, which can be achieved through twelve principles. These steps are as follow.

1 - Knowledge: Our Nabi Hazrat Muhammad (P.B.U.H) has said that an action performed without knowledge is far inferior the one done with full knowledge about it. We should therefore know: (a) which of the Islamic practices are obligatory and which are Sunnah (done by Hazrat Muhammad (P.B.U.H)). (b) what is obligatory and what is sunnah in wazu (a method that involves washing different parts of our body) and Namaz. (c) how does Shaytan (enemy of God) cause disturbance in the proper observance of Namaz.

2 - Wazu: we must try to: (a) Clean our heart of jealousy and revenge, just as we wash other parts of our body. (b) Keep ourselves clean of sins. (c) Be neither wasteful nor miserly in the use of water.

3 - Dress: It should be: (a) Got through honest earning. (b) Clean. (c) According to Sunnah, e.g. the ankles should not be covered. (d) Simple, and should not display vanity or pride and self importance.

4 - Time: We should be: (a) Able to tell correct time at any moment. (b) Always watchful about Azan (Calling by man from Mosque for prayer). (c) Particular about the time of Namaz, lest we should be too late for it.

5 - Facing the Direction of Kabba: There are three things to be ensured in facing the direction of Kabba (Situated at Makkah, Saudi Arabia): (a) we must face the direction of Kabba physically. (b) Have the heart in union with Allah (God), for He is the direction of the Kabba of the Heart. (c) Be as attentive as a slave is before his Master.

6 - Intention: For this we need to be particular about three things: (a) We must be definite as to what Namaz we are offering. (b) Remain constantly conscious of our presence before Allah (god) Who sees us. (c) Have perfect faith that Allah (God) knows all that is in our hearts.

7 - The first Allah u Akbar by which one starts Namaz: The essential of the first Allah u Akbar by which one starts Namaz are: (a) To pronounce the words correctly. (b) To raise both hands up to the ears. This signifies that we have cut off our connection with all, except Allah (God). (c) To feel the Greatness of Allah (God) in our heart when we say Allah u Akbar.

8 - Qiyam (Standing and reciting the Quran in Namaz): While in Qayam we should: (a) Keep our gaze at the place of sajda (Particular place in ground where we put our forehead). (b) Feel in our heart that we are standing before Allah (God). (c) Not attend to anything else. Looking here and there is like a person who after reaching the presence of a king, then starts to look right and left when the king is attending to him.

9 - Recitation of the Quran: The essential of reciting the Quran are: (a) To recite the Quran with correct pronunciation. (b) To ponder on the meanings of what we recite. (c) To bind ourselves to obey what we recite.

10 - Ruku: The essential of ruku are: (a) To keep the back quite straight i.e. the whole body above the legs should be in one horizontal line. (b) To hold the knees firmly with fingers spread apart. (c) To recite subhana rabbiyal- azim with dignity and keep in mind the greatness of Allah (God).

11 - Sajda: The essential of Sajda are: (a) To place the hands flat and close to the ears. (b) To keep the elbows raised above the ground. (c) To recite Subhana rabbiyal ala with devotion.

12 - Qadah (sitting between the two sajdas): The essential of qadah are: (a) To sit upon the left foot, keeping the right one vertical. (b) To recite tashahhud with devotion, keeping the meaning in mind, for it contains greetings for the Hazrat Muhammad (P.B.U.H) and dua (pray) for the Muslim brethren. (c) To make intention for salam to the angels as well as the people on the right and on the left.

As sincerity is the essence of all these points, which requires us: 1. To offer Namaz with the sole purpose of pleasing Allah (God). 2. To understand that is only through the favour of Allah (God) that we are able to offer Namaz. 3. To hope for the reward promised by Allah (God).

Roza (Fasting)

Fasting is also important prayer. Allah says in the Holy Quran "O believers, you are enjoined to keep fast, as the people before you were enjoined similarly, so that you may become pious "

Therefore it is necessary for every Muslim (man and women) to keep fast in the month of Ramadan (Holy Month). There are 30 Roza's (fast) in a year. And a man after 14 and women after 9 must take a fast.

Zakat

Zakat is also a basic principle of Islamic way of life. In the Quran and Hadith, the payment of Zakat as been made compulsory for every "Sahib-e-Nisab (a person having a money)".

Allah says: " and be steadfast in prayer, practice regular Zakat and Bow down Your heads with those who down"

The Holy prophet says " A person who believes in Allah and his prophet should pay zakat out of his goods and wealth."

The Messenger of Allah"( peace be upon Him ) said: " Islam has been built on five pillars, Testifying that there is no God but Allah and Mohammed is the messenger of Allah, performing the prayers, paying the Zakat, making, the pilgrimage to the house of Allah, and fasting Ramadan "

( Buhkary and Muslim )

The income from Zakat is spent on the poor, the helpless and the needy. Every "Sahib-e-Nisab" person must pay 2.5% of his useless earnings as Zakat to a poor and needy persons. Zakat should be paid to following persons.

1- The poor

2- The needy people

3- Those employed to administer the funds

4- Those whose hearts has been recently reconciled to truth

5- Those in Bondage

6- Those in Debt

7- In the cause of Allah

8- The wayfarers

Haj

Haj is also an important principle of Islam and a great prayer. It is compulsory for every adult, sane and affording Muslim. On the occasion of Haj, Muslims from all over the world perform this duty at Baitullah, Arafat and other places in Saudi Arabia. Besides Haj, Jehad also has great significance. Jehad means that financial and physical sacrifice which is made for the protection and promotion of Islam.

Things about Islam you need to know

There are a lot of negative things about Islam that circulates the news these days. Obviously, terrorism and a violent Islamic holy war are negative. However, as I with concern is the other, more interesting things about Islam that provides instant points in common with the Christians and leads to inter-religious dialogue. It's interesting things and there are tons of the same.

Everyone knows about the five pillars and all those common things about Islam. But do you know about the five important truths about Jesus light the Qur'an gives faith of? In fact, there are more, but five is a good start. The Qur'an reveals the following about Christ:

1 Jesus was the son of Maria

2. Jesus was born of a Virgin

3. The day of his birth was blessed

4 Was declared a miracle for all men

5 He was without sin

Any of these truths serves as a springboard to the Bible? Certainly, all of them are quite effective. To communicate the Gospel to Muslims usually start with one of these bridges, and then simply say, "the rest of the story is in the Bible... you would like to read it?" By the grace of God, many a man has accepted the offer and received the Holy Book of God. Some never see again, however, others meet with mature Christians regularly to read and talk about it. It's the things about Islam that we appreciate. Allow me to lagoons of bridge of spiritual understanding of a person and get to the truth of the Gospel.

Let's practice together our deductive skills... Take a look at the following verses of the Qur'an. Can you find the points mentioned in them?

Look at! In Los Angeles, said: "Oh Mary!" Allah gives you glad tidings of a Word from him: his name is Jesus Christ, the son of Mary, held in honor in this world and the more beyond and (the company of) the closest to Allah; S. 3:45

She said: "O my Lord!" "How am I going to have a son when no man has touched me?" Said: "even so: Allah createth what he willeth: when he has decreed a plan, but he says, 'Be' and is!" S. 3:37

He said: Nay, I am only a Messenger from your Lord and (remember) that they guarded their chastity: he breathed us in her our spirit, and she made us and her son a sign for all peoples. (to announce) thee the gift of a Holy son. S. 19

So peace is with me the day I was born, the day that I die, and the day I shall be increased up to life (again)! S. 19: 33

As you learn this and other interesting things about Islam, be careful to not be fooled by the occasional poor English translations from the original Arabic Quran. Sometimes poor Word options occur that you can change the understanding of a speaker of English of a text of the Qur'an. Sometimes, especially with regard to the death of Christ, gross misrepresentations of 'annoying' words are committed. Another thing that monitor for used Koranic passages to witness or to discuss with the Muslims without fully reading and understanding them first. I know a lot of things about Islam, but I am careful and determined in how to use the Qur'an. I don't use each verse or every angle of a common ground. Use the bridges that I know are robust and proven.

I say this because there are many "lists" out there with Koranic passages unproven and untested. Not only tell a Muslim a certain verse says ' this and ' without being certain that actually say that 100%. This is very embarrassing and can undermine the credibility. Are there any other things about Islam that you and I do not know? Of course there are. I continue to study and are they inclined to what I can take the bits of truth I found in the Qur'an which aim to Christ and the Bible.

Wadia Abdullah Ibn Az-Zahir is a fervent follower of Christ who travels extensively throughout the Middle East share the Gospel with Arab Muslims. There is much more about how to use the Qur'an and interesting things about Islam that can help us to produce more fruit. Simple approach of Wadia uses these types of Koranic bridges to Christ and is field proven and Christ honoring. http://www.islamandjesus.com.

11th July 2007 marks a landmark in the history of the Ismaili Muslim community, as this day marks the completion of the 50th year of Imamate of the leader of the Ismaili Muslim community, Prince Karim Aga Khan 1V. He is the current (49th) Imam of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims. His contribution in the field of education, medicine, architecture, social work, institution building, relief work, etc., is spectacular. He always tried to bring the positive image of Islam in front of others. His attractive personality has influenced many Muslim brothers to work for the welfare of the people. He is the direct descendant of Sir Aga Khan 111, whose contribution for the establishment of Pakistan can never be forgotten.

Prince Karim Aga Khan, the Aga Khan IV is the eldest son of Prince Aly Salman Khan and his wife, Princess Tajudowlah. He was born in Geneva, Switzerland on December 13, 1936. Hinduism and Islam

HINDUISM

The Vedas are a body of intuitively won accumulated knowledge bearing the date nor any author's name. People who have contributed to this vast Fund of knowledge were all the rishis who had renounced the world. Intuition doesn't work unless one has risen to levels higher consciousness. And in order to achieve the highest levels of awareness that one has to give necessarily related with body ego. Hinduism does not emanate from an individual not figure in any of a book bearing a date. Lord Krishna said in the Bhagavad-Gita that as and when it arises the need he could embody and until today it has fulfilled the promise.

Merits and demerits

Freedom total allowed by the religion allows practitioners as the leaders think freely at all times and this is allowing religious leaders to keep the needs of the mind of changing times and interpret the teachings of the Vedas as a result. If any individual in the process of interpreting any shloka is mother by adding their own intelligence or distorts the essence of the shloka in any way there are any number of people who feel free to correct it and intellectual dialogue and explain convincingly why the particular interpretation is wrong.

Of course is the other side, in the sense of absolute freedom permitted as a result many Hindus becoming independent if not atheist. At the same time this is celebrated as a small price to pay for total freedom allowed by the religion.

ISLAM

On the other hand, Islam began with the Prophet - a historical reality of the sixth century! The divine revelation of the Prophet Muhammad in the 7th century was also knowledge intuitively evolved; fruit of life isolated who had led in the cave of Hira Mount for years.

Merits and demerits

Universal brotherhood is an excellent aspect of this religion. As a religion does not seem to be anything wrong on this on the other hand there is much to commend. Perhaps the Prophet had in mind barbarians were less civilized and still to come low his tutelage and who live in its vicinity within the small world of his. It was his style of approach as a warrior in order to obtain results in double quick time. Perhaps therefore in a sense, was right when he advised his followers to convert by force who are not agree to embrace Islam because it was unaware of the fact of the more advanced civilizations existed beyond the borders known to him at that time.

Day in and out Hindu sings ' Alá Ishwar tero naam' which means say Alá and Ishwar is their names. He sings with the firm conviction that God is one and their names are many. The underlying logic is very solid.

In this sense the Hinduism and Islam are exactly opposite. While the first is tolerance personified this survives and remains on the intolerance of violence. While Hinduism calls for introspection Islam on the other hand has nothing to offer even so much as an indication of introspection. While Hindu leaders believe in the interpretation of the Scriptures in the light of the realities of the land, the Muslims cannot be at peace or allow that others be at peace unless and until all the species of homo sapiens on this earth embraces his religion!(?) The element of intolerance towards other religions as well as violence in the name of religion although it may have been once relevant has outlived its purpose.

If the Islamic world is going to be diverted from the path of self-destruction is none other than the Almighty Alá can make it. But then unfortunately even this way seems to have been more or less permanently blocked by the line of the Prophet Muhammad that he is the last to visit this planet Earth.

Say that God is all powerful and at the same time they claim that it can not come in humans would be totalled contradiction in terms is not? Soon that is this really the best for religion and for the rest of the world.

Egypt and Islam end time prophecies is now developing

Egypt and Islam are prophecies of end time centered around a major event that describes a massive battle between a North and a South Islam based on power based to Catholic, leads to the world 3 Guerra. The great battle will come as the King of the South leads the King of the North to retaliate like a whirlwind, as detailed in Daniel 11: 40-42. "When is overthrown the King of the South, Egypt modern as a land will not be able to escape", he reveals the verse 42. Daniel 11: 40-42 is the writing on the future of this area.In verse 43: "The King of the North shall have dominion over gold and silver and everything beautiful in modern Egypt." "Ethiopians and Libyans will be on its way". Twice in the verse mentioned that the Egyptians may not escape.

How will this happen?

Today, the popular uprising that led to the fall of President Mubarak, along with growing opposition movements highlights Egypt in more danger than ever before falling in the hands of Islam through the Muslim Brotherhood.

It is expected that more radical Islamic groups inside the country will want to assume control and direct alliances with Iran. This is the worst case that the Government will have to work with and will happen soon as mentioned in the Bible. It is known that radical Islamic movements in the country will certainly have much influence in the Egypt policy, doing his best to the nation towards political objectives of Iran. Ultimately will be bad news for Egypt.

In the first parts of the 2009, when President Mubarak was warning diplomats from United States on Iran cancer spreading in the Middle East, U.S. President Obama was busy to host meetings at the White House with the Muslim Brotherhood. President Obama then became a guest speaker at the University of Cairo in June 2009, stating in front of his audience in Cairo that Iran had every right to develop nuclear energy, if they wanted to.

A few days later the Obama President delivered his speech in Cairo, thousands of Iranians spilled on the streets, angry and demanding for democratic freedom after mullahs had manipulated their elections for the candidate Ahmadinejad. President Obama withstood all criticism for not being a supporter of the popular protest that was brutally crushed by the Islamic regime. He made an excuse for the neutrality of the Americans, saying it is bad for years and years of Iran U.S. relations to be meddling in their affairs.

But with a pro - Government of United States in Egypt, America does not care much neutrality when it began to interfere when they began the first signs of problems with Mubarak. When there were demonstrations in Egypt, especially in Cairo, President Obama the explosion all gave his word that he was lining with the demonstrators anti-Mubarak was in the streets, even demanding there be an immediate transition of the Government.

Mubarak stood his ground to protect his legacy by noting their years and years of loyal service as the President of Egypt. No matter what things may have emerged from its rule, it cannot be denied that his reign brought many positive fruits. In the early 1930s that Mubarak was in power, he ruled over the most populous Arab nation, where the majority of Egyptians did not favor America and would rather be with influences from Islam. Mubarak managed to quell this religious extremism in Egypt while that at the same time promote interests abroad. At the same time, Egypt under the leadership of Mubarak maintained peace with Israel.

And that Mubarak arrives for all these? United States decides to give him pushing him aside casually for a populist uprising that has already been kidnapped by radical Islam.

Now, Mubarak is out of the picture and the Muslim Brotherhood at the edge of the establishment of a new Government of militant Islam in Egypt, which certainly shares the same objectives as Iran. What turned out with Mubarak is evidence that supports one of the largest Bible prophecy ever. It was the book of Daniel was written more than 2,500 years ago. God knew that Egypt would keep its name and become allies with Iran. Events today, below, are proof of God in the Bible prophecies was fulfilled in end time events.

I do not know is cheating, done! What Islam are they talking about? Part III of IV

All and every phenomenon (consciously or not) in the world that man is administered entirely by laws made by God, IE. they are obedient to God and submission to his laws, they are in the State of Islam. Man possesses the qualities of intelligence and the choice is therefore invited to submit to the good will of God and obey his law, i.e. to be a Muslim.

Submission to God's good will, together with obedience to his law beneficial, i.e. to become Muslim, is the best safeguard for peace and harmony throughout its existence of man.

What is still a subject to scrutiny in the Western world, based on the images of some distorted Islam would say is the concept of Jihad. Indeed the justification for Jihad is a complex and subtle issue. It is safe to assume that it is only until that carried out attacks (direct and indirect) delivered to the Muslim communities which, in somewhat disproportionate conditions, some counter-offensive occurred sporadically and somewhat strategically. The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), the second largest intergovernmental organization after the United Nations which has membership of 57 States had distributed on four continents, has closed the trend of the prevailing Islamophobia throughout the world on XI session of the Islamic Summit held in the Senegalese capital Dakar on 13-14 March 2008. The organization urged Europe and America to take stronger measures against 'Islamophobia' in a report had been prepared for a Summit of the 57 members in Dakar and warned that an increase "alarming" anti-Islamic insults and attacks in the West has become a threat to international security. This monitoring group hopes that Europe and North America to do more, through legislation and social action, to protect Muslims from threats and discrimination and prevent insults against Islam's religious symbols.

Misleading errors were made in our time and in the middle ages (of Islam) due to an inaccurate interpretation of the Jihad. As it must be understood that the word "Jihad" is derived from the Arabic root "Juhd", which means "strive" and therefore used figuratively to religious wars. It seems that the word "Yudh", which is commonly used by Hindus to mean war, is actually a corruption of the word jihad. Since Arabic is the mother of all languages, emerged from which all other languages, the word "Yudh", which is Sanskrit means war is really the same as "juhd" or "jihad". Over time the letter "jim" was replaced by the letter "and" and then another alteration, the word spoken with phonetic emphasis.

Patriarchs and religious scholars have always been jealous of prophets and messengers of God due to its previous losses to disciples and prestige. This provoked the hostility of the scholars Pagan, Jewish and Christian and prevented them from accepting the truth in the time of Muhammad (PBUH). Orphans and weak, defenceless women were massacred in the streets and alleys. Even so, God sent there not be any retaliation against evil. While the streets ran red with their blood, not make a sound. This attitude of humility and firmness caused the enemies of Islam to intensify its persecution, and keep preying on that Holy community to date.

As a result of the foregoing, here comes the commandment which in other words, came to be known as Jihad. The language par excellence, which still stands in the Qur'an as specific to those days when people come into the fold of Islam were being slaughtered like sheep and lambs, as follows: Allah has heard the cryof oppression who are killed and converted unfairly from their land and allowed to retaliate. Allah is omnipotent and capable of helping the oppressed. (Al - Juzw 17, Surah al - Hajj).

Three Departments Of Islam

Islam is the largest religion and is growing day by day (Alhamdulillah). Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam), said: "Islam is to testify that there is no God but Alá and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to perform the prayers, pay the Zakaat to fast in Ramadan and make the pilgrimage to the House if you are able to do so".

Imaan (belief), Salah (prayer), fast, Zakaat and pilgrimage to the House (of Allah Ta' wing) also referred to as the five pillars of Islam. These are the compulsory duties of a Muslim to carry out these activities.

Islam is basically divided into three main categories. Everything goes when Hazrat Ibrahim (A.S) and his son Hazrat Ismail (A.S) were building the House of Allah and were praying. Koran speaks of his prayer: "our Lord!" Send including an own Messenger who shall rehearse Thy signs instruct them in Scripture and wisdom and sanctify them: because you are the sorrow of might, the wise. "

Hazrat Ibrahim prayed to Allah (SWT) to send a Messenger to this man that does three things:

call them to Allah (SWT), preaching
instruct in Scripture and wisdom
the last is to sanctify them

In fact this payer was for Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam). Allah Ta' wing kept his promise and sent to his beloved messenger Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) for the guidance and direction of this man.

Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) used to do all these things; I used to call people to Allaah Ta' wing. He was who broke the distance, race and color barriers saying "La Ilaha ill Alá Muhammadur Rasool Allah (God does not exist only Alá, Muhammad is the Rasool (Messenger) of Allah)". Sun, Earth of the Moon, stars, trees, all they are the signs of Allah (SWT). Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) used to recite the Koran Ayats and convince people about the oneness of Allah, that this was the first work of Hazrat Muhammad (SAW).

The second Department of Islam is learning the wisdom of Islam through writing. There were 72 people called Ashab-e-Suffa. Used to learn the Koran and the Hadith of Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) in Masjid-e-Nabwi.

The third and final Department of Islam is to purify the souls. Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) used to purify the souls of the Sahaba (R.A). After the departure of Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) of this world, the sahabs keeps working in these three departments but then there was a serious weakness in all departments.

Many Muslims placed in the race of energy crisis which is against the teachings of the Koran. When Muslims began to Jihad for money, they began to learn the Koran of wealth and there was khankas (Khankah is a place where scholars of Islam purify the souls of his followers) only to "generate business", began the fall of Muslims.

(All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the kingdoms; and prayers and peace of Allah be our Prophet Muhammad and all his family and companions).

If you want to read more articles on Islam and the Koran, you can find all here: Recitation of the Qur'an is an Islamic school online that offers the Koran teaching of online services. The school also teaches the Koran recitation and reading of the Quran with translation.

Practicing Medicine In Islam

I am one of those people who is always seeking natural medicine. Since childhood I have been suffering from Asthma. At a later age I started suffering from Diabetes. The amount of medicine I have taken terrified me knowing about all of the side effects and risks of these medications. A natural medicine seemed to be the best alternative. After all, natural is safe, right? Not necessarily. Natural products have their own chemicals too. What works for me, can as well, not work for someone else who is suffering from the same symptoms. Some herbs may cause an allergic reaction to few or cause damage to your body if taken excessively for an extended period let alone causing death in some cases.

I am not claiming that I won't try an advice or two. Hot tea with a twist of lemon always worked for me when I had cold. Raw potatoes worked on my ulcer and practically cured it. I also tried a natural pill to reduce the sugar level in my blood and it sure worked, reducing it from 320 to 110.

I couldn't however but notice the labeling when a certain company says something about their natural product to the extent of "Those statements are not endorsed by the FDA". Why would the Food and Drug Administration need to certify or endorse a natural product? I am definitely not a huge fan of FDA as I know how some medication got approved just to be pulled off the markets after a while due to their risks and damaging effects on health. I cannot deny though that the FDA prevented many fake products to reach the market. FDA however, or its alternatives in the developed world, do not exist in developing countries.

I would certainly blame those money hungered traders who have no ethics, for pumping thousands of fake medicine to Africa for example. However, are they to be blamed for the usage of local grown herbs? There is a responsibility on the local governments to control the issue. There is a responsibility on the one prescribing the herbs and other natural combinations, and there is for sure a responsibility on the individuals seeking such a therapy by knowing who they are dealing with.

I know that Islam is a complete religion. It has rules for all aspects of life. So I decided to look further into the issue of medicine from an Islamic point of view. Although I was fascinated by some recipes for various illnesses, I was fascinated more by the rules of practicing Medicine in Islam. Long before FDA, and various medical boards, or committees to license practitioners, Islam made it sinful for someone to practice medicine for a non doctor, or someone who does not have the experience to do so. Why? For a very simple reason! If you prescribe a medicine (be it a natural herb or other) you can actually cause a damage to the person you are prescribing the medicine to, if you are not knowledgeable in the matter. Risking human life is not a light subject in Islam.

I did not go deep in researching the subject but the fact that Islam protects human life by making it sinful to practice medicine without the necessary knowledge is amazing by itself. The meaning of a saying of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is that "one who does not know the specifics of medications, the different status of illnesses in different times, is forbidden, religiously, to attempt curing illnesses by using herbs or such other means" This knowledge comes by learning it from those who know the nature of illnesses and medication. Hence it is sinful for someone to rely on reading books only, to practice medicine without learning from knowledgeable people in this field.

Don't get me wrong though! Medicine is not only about going to this or that Medical school and prescribing pills manufactured by this known company or the other. Long before those schools and before those pharmaceuticals, people used to get sick and used to have medications for their sicknesses. Some like to ignore the existence of Herbal remedy while others reject totally the need for contemporary medicine. Me, I prefer a combination of both. I take my inhaler when I feel an asthma attack, but I cannot deny that a couple of times when I took a spoon of natural honey, it stopped the attack as fast as the inhaler did.

So a brief message to all those who are seeking medication for their illnesses" Know who you are dealing with" and for those prescribing medication or herbal solutions left and right without the proper knowledge " You may get away with it in this life, but you will pay for it in the hereafter"

I published some articles about natural products (Fruits, Vegetables, etc... Not pills or such) that may help for one case or another, yet i am not claiming that they will work. I am not a medical doctor and i won't pretend to be. One recipe for Diabetes that i wanted to use proved that it could cause me ulcer, and i only knew that because i asked someone who knows about natural medication. I just share what friends and family share with me.

I do not know is cheating, done! What Islam are they talking about? Part IV of IV

Most publicized Islamic scholars today completely misinterpret Jihad and misrepresented to the public in general. These scholars, of a species, are in fact responsible for murders committed by people ignorant, selfish, who ignore why Islam was forced to fight battles in its history. The billions of believers, who are the backbone of Islam have no need of Fame, prestige of material prosperity while it is substantial to the good life. Those who coin the politics of Islam today had a commitment that is coming to an end in this 21st century. Is carried out more research about Islam; the more unknown territories appear in the light towards the unexpected path cohesion in an interdependent world regardless of our individual missions. At the end of the Bush era, Rumsfeld announced new methods of rupture of soil which favor studies of the Middle East within its Department of former Pentagon to face more unknowns in Islam. Findings in Islam still pointing out the facts that we are dealing here with conscious people made aware of decisions based on the strains of modern life. Here is the time to make crystal clear: it is in the interest of peculiar excursive (scholars and Western policy) and to keep feeding the idea that Islam is a threat. With that premise, all awhile logistics counteroffensive is designed to "fight" a potential threat.

An associated press news, National President Barack Obama Security Adviser provides a refutation swept Wednesday (May 27, 2009) in charge of former Vice-President Dick Cheney that United States is less safe under the new administration.

Pointing to increases in spending, trying to get out of Iraq and revitalise the strategy for Afghanistan and a broad campaign repair the U.S. reputation abroad, former general of Navy James Jones said that the nation is safer today which has been in defence.

Imagine a moment: how much a joke and savings would be if the Western world realized that the scam of the century long that Islam is a threat was allegedly by a group of scholars somewhere in Arabia who wanted to fight another group of brotherhood to be and remain the godparents of Islam when there is no need to Godfatherhood all in the business of this God? It will surely take time until the real Islam accused together and that damage assessment policy of the branch of Islam and participated in a project of effective restoration is worth: the constituent largest in Islam is Pacific and was prepared to live in a manner consistent and peaceful, worker. What is happening in some other can affect me negatively, helping people help themselves will help change me... that touch you always will be, sooner or later. You can not live forever and enjoy life forever, which means that we are here on a mission, timeline and fundamentals that remains to be grateful to those who before and after us in concrete forms...Manage externalities always has been a matter of survival in Islam; But what to expect when those disseminating news are interested in the facets more eccentric of the truth?

Convert Now to Islam

I invite you to convert to Islam. The reasons are many. I will mention the most important reasons:

1- One God:

In Islam, there is only One God. In many other religions, there are many gods. What wil happen if the God decided something and His son decided another contradicting thing? There will be a conflict between them and the universe will be destroyed.

2-Simple and Clear Religion:

You have to believe that there is no deity but Allah and that Mohammad is the apostle of Allah. You have to worship the God. And you will enter the Heaven. Besides, Allah will bless your life in our world.

3-We believe that Moses and the Chirst are the apostles of Allah.

They have invited their followers to follow Mohammad -may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him- when he appears. But some of their followers have changed the Bible.

4-In Islam, there are harmony and balance between the soul and the body.

Islam does not forbid materialistic pleasures, but Islam is a unit of enjoying our lives and more important obeying our God and Creator.

5-Clear and Simple Answers to the following Questions:

a-What is the origin of the universe?

The God has created the universe.

b-What is the purpose of our life?

We were created to live on the earth, but more important to worship our God.

c-What will happen to us after death?

There will be the day after. The believers will enter the Heaven and the unbelievers will enter the hell.

Islam and beliefs and Zikr

Islam is the religion of humanity. Islam makes human spiritual psychological, more humane. We believe in Allah, his angels, his books, his prophets, day of reckoning, and all the good and bad comes from Allah. Islam requires that we should act after pray to God with shahadah in the heart. Islam gives to human thought of his greatness, so he might know the universe itself and its creator and thanks blessings of Allah. Justice, brotherhood are characteristic of Islamic civilization and its base is Taqwa (fear of Allah).

Allah has given us Qur'an, Sunna and these are the greatest blessings for us. It is the way of Alá, removes the blessings of a nation or a man, if they do not praise or thanks to Alá. Not only Alá removes blessings but also breaks his spiritual relationship with him and put him in the hands of Satan. Knowledge without the guidance of some civilizations of great leader and the United Nations could not be prosperous and successful. This is also the truth clear to a Royal Society lies in the truth of their beliefs and Nations rise and fall due to relatives of their beliefs. Beliefs show the human character, the character of the United Nations.

If the beliefs are weak then destroy society and affect every walk of life. Beliefs which are in accordance with nature are more powerful. Powerful beliefs define positive and complete way of life. So the world is agreed or not the truth is Islam is the religion of nature and the key to its success to this world and hereafter. In surah rom Dios said "you should choose Alá against anything else and that is human nature that Alá created every human". in the wing of Sura God said "true God made everything and give the correct way". Islam is the only religion that Alá wants to follow.

People from all walks of life are looking for happiness, peace and tranquillity. Black & white old & young, everyone wants to be at peace.

"Truth!" "Only the Zikar of Alá your heart find peace." Qur'an (Sura 13: 28 verse)

Zikar, pronounced Dhi-kar, means remembrance. Often associated with Alá means "Remembrance of Allah".

Remembrance of Allah all the time is the key to success. Nobody can deny the importance, virtues and fruits of Zikar, especially Qalbi Zikar zikar secret of the heart. Qalbi Zikr is practiced by all the truth, close & elite friends of Allah and the time has now come to make known to all. Only the chosen procedure.

Education and Islam

Islam is the religion of peace, and it is one of the most sacred and trustworthy religions, which has given us guidance in every aspect of life. Islam has given us education with knowledge which has no limits. The Holy Quran is the most sacred book of Allah revealed on Prophet Muhammad (SAW), for the upliftment guidance and enriched messages to the humanity.

Education is the knowledge of putting one's potentials to maximum use. Without education, no one can find the proper right path in this world.

This importance of education is basically for two reasons. Education makes man a right thinker. Without education, no one can think properly in an appropriate context you. It tells man how to think and how to make decision. The second reason for the importance of education is that only through the attainment of education, man is enabled to receive information from the external world. It is well said that

"Without education, man is as though in a closed room and with education he finds himself in a room with all its windows open towards outside world."

This is why Islam attaches such great importance to knowledge and education. When the Quran began to be revealed, the first word of its first verse was 'Iqra' that is, read..

The reflective book of Holy Quran is so rich in content and meaning that if the history of human thought continues forever, this book is not likely to be read to its end. Every day it conveys a new message to the humanity. Every morning, it gives us new thoughtful ideas and bound us in the boundaries of ethics.

Islamic Education is one of the best systems of education, which makes an ethical groomed person with all the qualities, which he/she should have as a human being. The Western world has created the wrong image of Islam in the world. They don't know that our teachings are directly given to us from Allah, who is the creator of this world, through our Prophets.

The Muslims all over the world are thirsty of acquiring quality education. They know their boundaries and never try to cross it. It is the West, which has created a hype that the Muslim are not in a path of getting proper education. They think that our education teaches us fighting, about weapons, etc., which is so false. This is true that there are certain elements, which force an individual to be on the wrong path, because as we will mould a child, they will be like that, but it doesn't mean that our religion teaches improperly to us.

Our Holy Prophet (SAW), said,

Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave.

And:

Seek knowledge even [if it is to be found in a place as distant as China. At the battle of Badr, in which our beloved Holy Prophet (SAW) gained victory over his foes, seventy people of the enemy rank were taken to prison. These prisoners were literate people. In order to benefit from their education the Prophet declared that if one prisoner teaches ten Muslim children how to read and write, this will serve as his ransom and he will be set free. This was the first school in the history of Islam established by the Prophet himself with all its teachers being non-Muslims. The Sunnah of the Prophet shows that education is to be received whatever the risk involved.

Today, the Muslims are acquiring good ideas, thoughts, knowledge, and skills, from all corners of the world. The world is moving very fast, and in this industrialize world, It is the duty of the teachers to give quality ethical integrated education to the Muslim students worldwide, because children are invaluable assets of future generations.

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) encouraged all Muslims to acquire knowledge and share it. He said:

"Acquire knowledge, for he who acquires it in the way of Allah performs an act of piety; he who speaks of it, praises the Lord; he who seeks it, adores Allah; he who dispenses instruction in it, bestows alms; and he who imparts it to others, performs an act of devotion to Allah." (Bukhari, Muslim)

All the teachers of either secular or religious education should give more attention to the pupils inside the classroom. It is necessary that in the Islamic system that we should consider these dear children as our own children, and put aside all other considerations, and rise above all such things and realize our duty and our mission. We should raise the standards of education and attend to the needs of these children. We should realize our duties with earnestness and awaken to the sense of responsibility. It has been seen that there are certain teacher who are not fulfilling their duties with keen interest. I would like to request all the teachers that for the sake of God, for the sake of your revolutionary duty, teach the children with devotion and dedication.

It is important that we advance our work through discussions, debates, studies, and through proper distribution of work among ourselves.

We must never forget that we are living in an Islamic State, and our aim should be simultaneously to create both an independent as well as an Islamic culture in character. Independence and richness of content are indeed among the characteristics of the Islamic culture. Our system is an ideological system.

We should make our child enthusiastic, dynamic, and this search should pervade every corner of our society. We should aspire them to be truthful and sincere.

Self-sacrifice and generosity, love of freedom, the resolve for resistance and headstrong perseverance, the courage to welcome martyrdom-all these are the new values of the new generation, which should be taught according to the teaching of Islam.

The doors of the school should always be kept open for the sake of Islam, for the sake of the Muslim Ummah.

Bollywood After 9/11 - The Depiction of Islam and the West in Indian Cinema

Since the dramatic events of 9/11, Bollywood cinema has shown an unusual interest in the terrorist film genre, especially as regards to international terrorism and global tensions between Islam and the West. Striking examples of this genre include Kabir Khan's New York (2008), Karan Johar's My Name is Khan (2010), Rensil D'Silva's Kurbaan (2009) and Apoorva Lakhia's Mission Istanbul, to name a few. Films like Anil Sharma's Ab Tumhare Hawale Watam Sathiyo (2004) and Subhash Ghai's Black and White (2008) focus on terrorist issues within the Indian subcontinent itself. The latter films have continued in the tradition of pre 9/11 terrorist films like Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Mission Kashmir (2000), Mani Ratnam's Dil Se (1998) and Bombay (1995). Ratnam's Bombay dealt with the devastating Hindu and Moslem riots in 1991, which cost over a 1000 lives. Chopra's Mission Kashmir dealt with a scenario of local terrorist activity in the Kashmir region sponsored by international terrorist cells working from Afghanistan. In this way the terrorist genre is not an entirely new genre in Bollywood, nor is terrorism an unfamiliar phenomenon in the day to day activities of the Indian subcontinent (the most recent and brutal terrorist attack was the Mumbai massacre in 2008). What makes the recent spate of terrorist films interesting is that they have entered the global sphere and have become part and parcel of a transnational dialogue between East and West and Islam and the other.

To make the terrorist genre more palatable, Bollywood has traditionally spiced up the violence and suspense with the hallmark Bollywood song and dance interludes and sentimental romantic exchanges between the hero and heroine. Mission Kashmir is notorious for its graceful dances and stirring emotional exchanges between the main protagonists, played out on the violent backdrop of terrorism in Kashmir. Mani Ratnam's Bombay likewise mixes up the most brutal scenes of Hindu and Moslem hatred and violence with delicious comedy and a forbidden love affair between a pious Moslem girl and a boy from a highly placed Shaivite Hindu family. His father is the trustee of the village temple and both the family patriarchs are violently opposed to the children marrying outside their caste and religious community.

Karan Johar's My Name is Khan

Following in the Bollywood tradition of mixing genres (known in the industry as the masala or spicy recipe film), Karan Johar's My Name is Khan blends comedy and romance with the political hot potato of post 9/11 bigotry and racial hatred in the US. The film's theme of ultra-nationalist extremism culminates in the senseless killing of a young Indian boy Sam or Sameer, who is beaten to death by youths in the football ground, in part due to the adopting of his stepfather's name Khan. Overflowing gushes of emotion and heart stirring romantic songs, such as the mixing of the 1960's counter culture anthem "We Shall Overcome" (sung in both Hindi and English), occur throughout the film to both lighten the tension and to exemplify the presence of light and hope in a world darkened by the bitter shadow of global terrorism. The fact that the central protagonist Rizvan Khan is a pious Moslem, and politically neutral to the hysteria of the debate, is significant. Brought up by his mother that there are no fixed labels such as Hindu and Moslem, but only good and bad people, Rizvan Khan freely practises his religion with equal love and respect for all other races and creeds, only differentiating between what is in the hearts and minds of people, not to what religion they profess, or to what race, culture and nationality they belong.

My Name is Khan is also significant for Bollywood fans in that it reunites the biggest heart throb couple of Hindi cinema from previous decades, Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan. The duo was previously paired in two of Karan Johar's earlier blockbusters Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1995) and Kabhi Kushi Kabhie Gham (2001). Both of these films were sentimental gushy romances, literally overflowing with juicy outpourings of emotion and feeling; a phenomenon which is termed rasa in India. The song and dance sequences were also very elaborately staged and combined a balance of the traditional Indian music and dance forms (Hindustani music and traditional folk dances) as well as modern Western forms. This ensured the films' immense popularity in both India and diaspora countries like Canada, the US and the UK.

Karan Johar continues to utilise the Bollywood masala formula in My Name is Khan, exploiting a sentimental and occasionally drawn out love affair between the autistic hero Rizvan Khan and his eventual Hindu wife Mandira, a proprietor of a successful hair dressing salon in San Francisco (the "city of love" which symbolizes the 1960s counter culture movement exploited by Johar in the "We Shall Overcome" sequence). In the preliminary scenes of the film, America is portrayed as the land of freedom and opportunity, the nation where all races and religions are given the possibility to move forward and achieve prosperity and happiness in a way that is seen to be almost impossible in a country like traditional India, buffeted as it is with caste and religious prejudices and between half and two thirds of its population living in poverty.

For foreign nationals or NRI's (non-resident Indians), however, 9/11 radically changes this formula and shatters the American dream nurtured for decades by an Indian diaspora which has merged its Indian cultural roots with American ideals of individual freedom and consumer prosperity. According to Johar's film, this is now the plight of the Khans who, instead of continuing to act as fully integrated members of the mainstream community, now suddenly find themselves on the periphery of a post-9/11"us and them" rhetoric, fuelled by an ultra-nationalist Republican President, who perceives the world in black and white realities, which have little to do with the everyday lives of the average individual. It is no coincidence that it is the newly elected President Barack Obama (played by his look alike Christopher B. Duncan) who greets Rizvan Khan at the end of the movie and applauds him for his faith in God and his humanity and perseverance. For Karan Johar, Obama's election is symbolic of the "us and them" divisions in the US psyche being brought to a close along with the restoration of the innate ideals for which the American Republic and its people stand.

Before the nation's divisions are healed, however, the Khan's experience extreme personal hardships due to their ethnicity. These hardships culminate in the tragic death of their teenage son Sameer, beaten to death in the school playing field by racist youths. In her grief, Sameer's mother Mandira blames her husband Rizvan, accusing him of the fact that if she and her son had not taken the name of Khan, he would not be dead. She then tells him that the only way he can atone for this stigma of being a Khan and, by implication a Moslem, is to meet the US President (at the time it is George W. Bush) and to tell him that: "My Name is Khan and I am not a Terrorist." This simple phrase becomes a kind of mantra throughout the film, powerfully confronting the viewer's post-9/11 prejudices by refusing to link the two concepts of Islam and terrorism together: i.e. my name is Khan, therefore I am a Moslem, but at the same time just because I am a Moslem, does this mean that I am a terrorist? Unhappily, during the hysteria that followed in the wake of 9/11 for many Westerners the two terms, Moslem and terrorist became pretty much synonymous.

This is a film therefore which, unlike its predecessors, is not only aimed at instructing Indians and West Asians (it broke all records in Pakistan), but is also aimed at educating and enlightening Westerners. This it does in a very subtle and didactic way, not only through its exploitation of familiar West Asian icons, but also through its exploration of themes and images universal to the US and the West: the 1960s counter culture, the plight of the coloured people in the South and references to the civil rights movement via the film's theme song "We Shall Overcome." This famous anti-establishment song from 1960s when sung in Hindi by a devout Moslem in a black gospel church gives the audience an almost surreal feeling of both merging and, at the same time transcending, national, racial and socio-religious cultural borders: a path to world brotherhood and unity which has been courageously expounded by two of the twentieth century's great spiritual leaders, India's Mahatma Gandhi and America's Martin Luther King.

Karan Johar thus draws upon both the Western ideals of liberty and individualism, as well as propounding the roots of West Asian religious piety and communal solidarity. By doing this My Name is Khan proposes an alternate model of global brotherhood and transnational identities and exchanges. This new global model for Johar is one which draws its inspiration and ideals from the grass roots level- from the poor coloureds of Georgia, from the socially ostracised Moslems, and from the autistic and mentally handicapped. All of them are an integral part of this global humanity and in the end the figure of Shah Rukh Khan, the biggest megastar in the global forum today (including Hollywood), speaks for all of them, when he says my name is Khan and I am not a terrorist, not an outcaste and not a threat to the US or the essential values which it seeks to export to the rest of the world. Rather, as pious Moslems, those like Rizvan Khan have something of value to contribute to the US and the West, and when those in power allow them to do so, the essential values which have made the US great can not only be maintained but increased and broadened. On the other hand, ultranationalist extremist practises will only create more and more hatred and division, so that even those who have assimilated the American Dream will grow to become its most sworn enemies. This is the main theme of Kabir Khan's New York, which I will briefly discuss in part two of this article.

Kabir Khan's New York

Although not as successful at the box office as Karan Johar's blockbuster, Kabir Khan's New York is perhaps an even more interesting example of the transnational trend in the Bollywood terrorist genre. Released in 2008, New York focuses on the lives of three trendy young Indians studying at New York State University together. The usual Bollywood masala romance dominates the first half of the film, focusing on a sentimental love triangle between Maya (Katrina Kaif), Sameer or Sam (John Abrahams) and Omar (Neil Mukesh). Both Katrina Kaif and John Abrahams, as well as Irrfan Khan (playing the FBi agent Roshan) are well established stars in Bollywood (Irrfan Khan also starred as the policeman who interrogates the main protagonist in Slumdog Millionaire). And the presence of these stars, along with the solid musical score and the dramatic love triangle scenario, assured the film's success despite its controversial theme. Significantly, Sam and Maya fall in love and shatter Omar's emotional world at around the same time as the two hijacked passenger planes are driven into the Twin Towers. As with My Name is Khan, actual footage of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre is utilised in the film.

From this point onwards, a film which has been mostly centred upon a sentimental love conflict between three friends now becomes a political indictment of the Bush administration's post-9/11 terrorist policies. Sam, as part of the FBI's nationwide hunt for terror suspects, is arrested, incarcerated and tortured. These tortures are graphically depicted in the film and are apparently based on true life accounts of innocent victims, who have been illegally arrested and incarcerated for no other reason than their having the wrong ethnic background and religious persuasion. During the final credits a grim note to this effect informs the viewers of the facts that: "In the days following 9/11 more than 1200 men of foreign origin in the US were illegally abducted, detained and tortured for as long as 3 years. The government did not find evidence linking a single one of them to the 9/11 attack...."

The central protagonist Sam or Sameer functions as a prototype for these 1200 men. Indeed, from being a totally assimilated American before his torture and arrest, Sam now becomes a Moslem Jihadi, fusing his hatred for the United States with that of terrorist cells in Pakistan, Afghanistan and the Middle East. His old friend Omar is recruited by the FBI to spy on Sameer and his Hindu wife Maya and to crack open Sameer's links to international terrorist cells. Omar is coerced into betraying his friends at the threat of disappearing into the FBI's custody and being tortured for months on end as Sameer had been. In this way, even if the film does not actively promote Jihad as a fundamental tenet of Islam, it does portray a sympathetic psychological profile of the terrorist mind-set. Sameer's friend Omar eventually understands this also when he is given Sam's story and the barbaric nature of the ordeals he has had to endure and which have caused him to become an international terrorist.

Unlike Rizvan Khan, who has no qualms about informing the FBI about the fanatic Doctor Faisal's terrorist plot in My Name is Khan, New York's Omar is torn between his sympathies for his friend Sam/Sameer and the US system of liberty and justice, which he sees as being seriously undermined by George Bush's invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan and his repressive domestic policies in the US, where under the Patriot Act fundamental individual rights and liberties of American citizens are apparently violated for no other reason than that they are of another ethnicity, culture and religious persuasion than the mainstream white majority. Omar, as the voice of reason and sensibility in New York, also represents the neutral observer, who is both within the system (he is educated at New York State University) and is outside it (he is an NRI national from Delhi living in the US). He has also been in love with Sam's wife Maya but has tried to detach himself from these feelings, indeed from feeling anything at all. As such his decision to infiltrate his friend's terrorist group and take part in its Jihad is significant. Omar is an "undecideable"; he is unsure of his identity, unsure of his ideals and his loyalties. Eventually, he betrays Sam and his group and communicates Sam's plan to blow up the FBI headquarters to the FBI agent Roshan and the relevant authorities.

Despite promises from Roshan and the FBI executive heads, both Sameer and Maya are shot dead by FBI snipers during negotiations for Sameer's surrender. According to Kabir Khan's controversial film, this kind of FBI brutality and overkill is symptomatic of the new post-9/11 ultra-nationalist America which, in its unrelenting quest to punish the guilty, also leaves in its wake the bloodied corpses of the innocent: not just Maya, but arguably also Sam himself. This is a theme which has been taken up courageously and sometimes uncompromisingly by Hindi cinema.

Another powerful example of this uncompromising condemnation of post-9/11America occurs in Rensil D'Silva's Kurbaan. Here, in an open discussion university forum, the main protagonist Riyaaz condemns US intervention in Afgahanistan and Iraq, claiming that the world's biggest terrorists are the white super powers. Riyaaz informs the ethnic white students present about certain uncomfortable realities in US politics, such as the fact that the Taliban was a creation of the CIA and that more than 500,000 civilians were killed in Iraq. Much to the horror and consternation of the students present, Riyaaz concludes his speech by saying that "just because you wear a suit and call yourself President does not make you any less a terrorist." This is pretty bold stuff and seems to be reflective of the growing dissatisfaction of certain Bollywood filmmakers towards a period in history where the West appeared to go totally wrong taking the downward path from humanitarian ideals of universal equality and democracy to policies of religious bigotry and totalitarianism.

Interestingly, although these themes have also been taken up by Hollywood, in films such as James Cameron's Avatar, they have been depicted in a less direct way. In Avatar, for example, the" shock and awe campaign" unleashed upon the indigenous inhabitants of the planet Pandora (clearly a reference to Bush's shock and awe campaign against Iraq), occurs in the context of an ingenious fantasy universe, where the brutality of corporate capitalism and US neo-imperialist policies is downplayed in that it not only happens in the safety of another continent, as with Iraq and Afghanistan, but occurs on another planet entirely!

The new Bollywood terrorist genre is therefore a more uncompromising and indeed disturbing contribution to the global debate than films like Avatar. This is due to the fact that West Asian directors depict terrorist activity from the contemporary political standpoint, along with exploring relevant issues connected with the stigmatised cultural and ethnic group, which has been largely denied a voice in this debate ever since the 9/11 event took place. As has traditionally been the case in Indian cinema, the new Bollywood terrorist genre gives the Moslem minorities a voice, telling their story from the inside, making them subject and not object and narrating the plot from the perspective of their culture, religion and community base. In My Name is Khan, for example, Rizvan's sister in law Hasina is persuaded to remove her hijab (head scarf) after being attacked and having it forcibly removed by an unknown assailant. Eventually, she restores the hijab to her everyday dress, including her lecturing job at university. Here she says to her students: "M y hijab is not just my religious identity. It is a part of my existence. It is me."

In Rensil D'Silva's Kurbaan, the central protagonist Riyaaz is also instrumental in educating white university students about their preconceptions of Islam as a violent religion and the Koran as a scripture promoting Jihad. Riyaaz flatly informs the students that the word Jihad is in fact mentioned in the Koran only 41 times, but that the term mercy and compassion is mentioned 355 times. In this way, the film's viewers are also informed that Islam is predominantly a religion of compassion and peace and not violence and bloodshed, as right wing vested interest groups have led us to believe in the past decade or so.

It is these perspicacious insights from within the socio-religious roots of West Asian culture which makes Indian cinema, often dismissed in the West as sentimental and trivial, such a profoundly didactic medium from which audiences, especially in the West, can increase their scant knowledge about the psychology behind Hindu and Moslem icons and spiritual practises. In an increasingly global world, where these icons and practises are continually crossing over and clashing with Western standards, this knowledge and awareness is not only relevant to us in the West, it is fundamental to our very existence.

Films like New York and My Name is Khan are an integral part of the teaching of that awareness.

60 Muslims Tell What's Really Happening in Islam

I am grateful to Eman Fahad Al Nafjan for bringing "The Future of Islam in the Age of New Media" to my attention. This amazing 60-minute audio program of 1-minute segments by 60 speakers compiled by Amir Ahmad is a significant contribution to international discourse, especially among Muslims! It highlights the fact that young Muslims are changing Islam itself at a breakneck pace, which has only begun to emerge to the rest of us in the Arab Spring.

Eman's one-minute is the second contribution in the program, immediately after Reza Aslan, the author of No God But God: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam. This placing is highly significant because Eman has been outspoken for Women's Rights in Saudi Arabia on her Saudiwoman's Weblog. Here she starts by stating pointedly, "I think future of Islam in the age of new media will involve taking Islam out of the hands of misogynist sectarian tribal sheikhs, who have closed us off from the rest of the world, into the hands of educated global Muslims, who will utilize these new tools to spread a moderate peaceful Islam, as it was in its Golden Age, when it was famous for its architecture, sciences, and arts. This new generation of Muslims will also activate the currently paralyzed role women play in Muslim society…."

I'll limit my quote to that to tantalize you to hear more. It is worth your time! Other speakers see social media as a destabilizing influence in the Muslim world. A few speakers point out that extremist Islamists have been using social media for recruiting for over a decade, but moderate Muslims have only begun to be heard since the advent of Facebook and Twitter. It is a beginning that will ultimately overwhelm and drown out the extremists, but the needed changes will take time.

It is highly significant that many of the participants highlight the need to be able to speak freely, without fear of reprisal, by circumventing censorship. Some point out that the "future of Islam is bright … because women will be able to shape Islam with men." No longer are Muslims limited in understanding their faith by going to the Mosque. "Islam will be by us but for everyone."

My reaction to this conference is that it is simply terrific! I shows the power of the changes that are coming in Islam, and the positive impacts this will bring to the world at large. Whether or not you agree with the changes, it is surely worth your time to listen to this presentation.

My one reservation is that this information gets out very rarely to the rest of us. It is a wonderful thing that Muslims, especially young Muslims, are seeing the need to discuss and reform their faith from within, but that news comes very sparsely to 99% of my countrymen, many of whom rely for their news on CNN and Fox News, or fundamentalist Christian preachers, who have little knowledge of Islam.

CNN is the channel of "Wars Are Us," while Fox News simply wants to vilify anything that has a Muslim label. The rest of the media seems to meekly follow in their wake on the topic of Islam, afraid of offending our bigoted masters. Until the good news of the many developments in Islam permeate the barrier of the mainstream media, we will be faced with continuing unjustified conflict and death.

Americans Generalize That Islam is Radical and Backward

In this post 9/11 decade, our world continues to brim with tension, discord and conflict. Americans now seem to be even more concerned about "Islamic radicalism", violence and terrorism thanks to our media and its agenda setting, while the overwhelming majority of Muslims in the Arab world condemn terrorism as an affront to Islam. Generalizations and stereotypes abound about Arab Muslims. Everything from polygamy, terrorism and violence, Islam, their marriage system, and women's rights to being walking time bombs living in a collectivistic society.

People are going to generalize; it's human nature. What we must learn to do is be alert so that we recognize blanket generalizations when we hear them; allowing them to raise a red flag within our minds. Culturally, not all generalizations and stereotypes are false. Some are partially true and others might be right on. Regardless, the main message here is to seek to understand rather than judge when we hear a generalization simply because there are no right or wrong - black or white - answers. One of the best ways to demystify Arab cultural practices is to dissect the generalizations associated with them. Take, for example, a commonly-held generalization that Americans have about Muslims. Islam is a radical, backward religion.

Islam and Christianity are not as globally different as one might first think. In fact, they share many similarities. Both Muslims and Christians believe in the one true God as the creator, in the angels He created, in the prophets through whom His revelations were brought to mankind, in Judgment Day and individual accountability for one's action, in God's complete authority over human destiny, and in life after death. Neither religion condones suicide.

A major difference, of course, is the Islamic belief that God's message was revealed to Prophet Muhammed - a mortal man - in the form of the Quran; whereas, Christians believe the Bible is the word of God and Jesus, the son of God. Muslims believe that God dictates a government's legitimacy. This is in contrast to our belief that America was founded on a clear separation of church and state and that elected officials preside over our government. Islam is more than a religion; it is a way of life. Muslims are not individuals following God. When you become a Muslim, you are accepted as a brother and sister to all of the other world-wide Muslims in this society-based religion.

It is important to distinguish between religion and culture. Although intertwined, they are also very separate. Arab is a culture and Islam is a religion. Not all Arabs are Muslim and not all Muslims are Arabs. In fact, Arabs make up only 15-18% of the Muslim world. (Indonesia claims the vast majority of Muslims.)

Because the Arab culture came before Islam, the culture often takes precedence over the religion. For example, in most Gulf Arab countries, children attending government (public) schools are separated by sex. That is, boys go to a boy's school and girls attend all-girls' schools. This is culture and has nothing to do with Islam.

Parents are held accountable to God for the way they raise their children. This is an example of the Arab culture and religion holding the same weight. Sharia law is the legal framework that guides the lives of Muslims. This system is often cited when zealots go on a campaign kick proclaiming how radical and backward Islam is.

There's that generalization again. Did just hearing it prompt you to form an opinion? Have you ever wondered how opinions are formed? I can think of five components right off the top of my head: lack of facts, listening to what others say without thinking for ourselves, ignorance, prejudice, and justifying a generalization by pointing to the actions of a few garnering all the media attention. Most Americans don't understand - or are unaware - that Islam is interpreted and practiced differently depending on the Islamic country.

Islam has two complementary aspects. There is the set of unchangeable principles that guide behavior, values and faith, and then there is a second one consisting of practical application for the first. These applications adapt and evolve according to conditions and the ever-changing times, and yes, these applications vary by country.

We constantly hear about the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Taliban's version of Islam, according to experts, is often described as narrow minded, intolerant and punitive. Their practice of Islam is very different from "mainstream" Islam, which is generally thought of as moderate and flexible. Raja Zafar ul-Haq, an Islamic scholar and Pakistani political activist, tries to close the gap when he counters the argument about Sharia law and punishments, such as cutting off a thief's hand. "They don't realize that there are 13 preconditions that have to be met before that punishment is ordered. That's why nobody's hand is ever cut off here," says Zafar ul-Haq.

Much of the radical violence associated with Islam originated with Osama bin Laden and his salifist belief that violence - rather than peaceful means - was the way to solve Islam's "problems". A strong minority of these extremists exist, having originated in Saudi Arabia, and are using their ideology to export violence worldwide for political gains. If you believe promoting awareness and understanding is important, a good first step is to recognize a generalization when you hear it. Don't unabashedly repeat it or accept it as truth. Demystifying cultures and religions begins with dispelling ignorance and blanket generalizations.

A Short History Of Islam

The teachings of Islam were passed down to humanity through Mohammed who is commonly thought of as the last, so far, in the line of Middle Eastern prophets. The first was Abraham of Judaism renown, then there was Jesus for Christianity and then came Mohammed. Mohammed was born in about 570 AD in Mecca, western Saudi Arabia and passed away 62 years later in 632 in Medina.

The Koran, or the 'Recitation' in English, consists of 144 chapters and was related to Mohammed by God. These teachings were written down by his scribes during the course of 23 years.

Like its predecessor religions, Islam is a monotheistic religion and its narrative includes stories or references to Abraham, Moses (and the Ten Commandments) and Jesus, but does not accept Christianity's declaration of his divinity.

Another major difference from the Middle Eastern religions before it, is that Jews trace their lineage through Abraham's son Isaac, whereas Muslims trace their history through Abraham's son Ishmael by another wife.

The root of the word Islam - 's-l-m' - means 'peace' and 'submission' (to God). A Muslim's association with God is determined by the 'Five Pillars of Islam'. These five pillars are: Shahadah (profession of faith); public and collective prayer five times daily; charity to the poor; fasting throughout the holy month of Ramadan and a pilgrimage to Mecca, the holiest of places to Muslims, at least one time in their lifetime.

Islam has strict dietary laws, notably about eating pork, and prohibitions against promiscuity, stealing, gambling and deceit. Muslims worship in Mosques and the services are held by Imams. The most critical time to pray is at midday on a Friday, which is the Muslim Sabbath.

The vast majority of Muslims are Sunnites, who are the traditionalists, and the rest are Shi'ites or 'partisans'. This could generally be compared with the relationship between Judaism and Christianity. The distinctions between the two sects in the both religions have caused untold misery over the centuries and there is no sign of it stopping any time soon.

There is considerably more known about Mohammed than about Jesus. Mohammed was brought up by his uncle and at the age of 25 he was a trader. At the age of 40, in 610, an angel instructed him to spread the word of God. He was not accepted in Mecca but the authorities invited him to quell the city of Medina in 622, which he accomplished.

His condition for accepting this task was that the people accept the word of God. This they did - this move is called the Hegim and it is the date from which Muslims record contemporary history - like the Western world uses the birth of Jesus.

By 632 Mohammed was dead, but by then the overwhelming majority of Arabs were Muslims. For one reason or another, Islam spread east and west from Saudi Arabia taken mostly by Arab traders probably. Islam never actually got a foothold in Europe (except Spain) but it did move East fairly extensively.
